The alt-country pioneers will release their latest album American Primitive on April 5
Rhett Miller bums a ride in the back of a pickup and takes on the signs of his past and future in the video for “Where the Road Goes,” Old 97's new song that celebrates the band's more than 30 years of longevity.
As Miller sings about various life and career ups and downs (“from the bottom of a bottle to the palace/ who knows where the road leads”), he sees the number 97 everywhere — on a freeway sign, above a gas station — and also a tumultuous marquee announcing American Primitivethe band's new album coming April 5th.
The LP is the band's 13th studio album and its longest-running original line-up of Miller, bassist Murry Hammond, guitarist Ken Bethea and drummer Philip Peeples. Produced by Tucker Martine, it marks 30 years since the group's debut album Hitchhiking in Rome features a cover designed by Hammond's son, Tex.
And if “Where the Road Goes” sounds particularly crazy, there's a good reason: REM's Peter Buck plays guitar on the recording. The Old 97's will support the album with a tour starting in Santa Fe in April.
