Pallbearer have announced a new album, Mind Burns Alive, and a 2024 North American tour. The doom band also dropped the video for the lead single “Where the Light Fades” ahead of the album’s May 17th release date.
The extensive tour will kick off June 6th in Memphis and runs through August 3rd in Houston. The rotating cast of support acts includes Rwake (June 6th to 9th; 29th), REZN (June 11th to 29th), Inter Arma (July 11th to August 3rd), and The Keening (all dates).
Tickets to select shows go on sale Friday (March 22nd) at 10 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster. Fans can also look for deals or get tickets to sold-out dates via StubHub, where your purchase is 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s Fan Protect program.
Pallbearer introduce a new sound on “Where the Light Fades,” dialing back the riffs and overt doom-metal characteristics for a moody and mellower alt-rock confection. Singer-guitarist Brett Campbell becomes a true frontman here, singing honestly and plaintively above muted chords that gradually rise in volume. There’s more emphasis on lyrics and dynamics — a deliberate decision on the part of the artist.
“These songs are a deeper exploration of dynamics and sonic color than anything we have done up to this point,” said Campbell of the nearly hour-long album. “I’m of the belief that true heaviness comes from emotional weight, and sometimes sheer bludgeoning isn’t the right approach to getting a feeling across.”
Regarding the poignant lyrics, Campbell said that the tracks act as “vignettes that tell the stories of people who deal with myriad sicknesses of the spirit… illnesses communicated by the world we live in, and the subjects are the symptoms of the disease.”
Five years in the making, Mind Burns Alive was originally set to be recorded in 2020 — and then again in 2022. Both sessions fell through, and it wasn’t until all four members of Pallbearer returned to their hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas — living locally to one another — that the album came to fruition, recorded in the band’s newly constructed studio.
“It’s ironic given that the album is largely centered around isolation,” said bassist-vocalist Joseph D. Rowland, “but it felt like it summoned us into being back together again in one town, after so long apart.”
