As Music's biggest night drew to a close, Grammy Award-winning boygenius took to the stage to celebrate — and send a critical message.
But first, the trio addressed the recent news of their hiatus. “That's funny because I guess we just didn't tell anybody, but we told each other at the beginning of this project that it would have a finite date, like a finite amount of time dedicated to it,” explained Phoebe Bridgers. “And we've completed that time and now we're walking off into the sunset.”
“It's nice to have a limit to what we've done,” added Julien Baker. “We put the record in the world and that is enough. You know?”
“That's why we show up and work so hard, because we knew we weren't supposed to keep it up,” Lucy Dacus said. “And it's like, this was our chance. Well, I'm glad we got it.”
And as it turned out, Bridgers saw another opportunity behind the scenes and didn't hesitate to take it.
When asked about the future of rock music and how women are dominating the field right now, he replied: “I have something to say about women. Former Recording Academy president Neil Portnow said if women want to be nominated and win Grammys, they should “step up”. He is also accused of sexual violence. So I would like to say to him, “I know you're not dead yet. But when you are, rot in the piss.'
Baker was quick to return it, adding, “That's very rock and roll.”
boygenius picked up a trio of awards during the Grammy premiere ceremony earlier Sunday: best rock performance and best rock song for “Not Strong Enough” and best alternative music album for the record.
