Later this week, Scottish-based singer/songwriter Josienne Clarke returns with her fourth full-length album, Bracket, I, arriving May 10 via Corduroy Punk. The record follows her attempt in 2023 Onlinewhich saw her re-record songs from her back catalogue. Bracket, I draws from a similar well of folk influences, both classic and contemporary, combining shimmering and evocative arrangements, warm instrumentation and an intimate lyrical voice. However, it is also deeply rooted in Clarke as an individual songwriter and performer. He plays guitar, saxophone, clarinet and backing vocals throughout the record and describes the album as a very personal work. “This is the sound of my journey towards some kind of resolution, searching and finding my own safe path,” he says.
Ahead of the album's release, Clarke shares a final taste of the album with her latest track, “Double-Edged Sword,” and its accompanying video, premiering with Under the Radar.
While “Double-Edged Sword” doesn't stray too far from Clarke's folk roots, it also has an understated power. Clarke's percussion is like a restless counterpoint to the stacked vocal harmonies, intense melodies and pastoral guitar lines. The track's instrumentation is shimmering and calm, but carries a decided undercurrent. Clarke thrives on this contrast, her lyrics capturing the track's themes of empowerment: “Bring me a double-edged sword / And I'll show you an iron will / I don't need nothing in my arsenal / Cause I'm still.”
Clarke says of the piece, “Sometimes your constant presence, bold movement, an act of resistance is enough. The longer I work in the music industry, the more I believe that success in it is a matter of endurance and resilience. To still be here, to create time after time whatever the external circumstances are and the same is not true of life in general.
Music Reference: I was going for the sound of The Stone Roses “Waterfall” meets Taylor Swift's “Anti-Hero” played by a folk singer-songwriter!”
