Next month, Austin-born, Nashville-based singer/songwriter and multi-arranger Max Frost returns with his new project. Shelby Ave Pt. 1, out on February 16. Frost debuted in 2018 with his first LP, Gold Rushand followed in 2022 with the Flying Machines ER. Shelby Ave Pt. 1 is the first part of a larger project to come, which Frost teases with a series of new singles, “Creep Back”, “Cig in the Morning” and “Black Hole Love”. Today, he shares a fourth and final single from the record, “The Ghost,” premiering with Under the Radar.
“The Ghost” finds Frost exploring mortality and unpacking the lingering pangs of grief, willing to follow the ghost of a loved one with him through life's winding paths. The poignant lyrics find a home amidst Frost's weathered vocal melodies, his voice filling the track with warmth and melancholy, infused with matching eerie harmonies. However, the low tones of the track are contrasted by the comfortable guitar work and lovely piano touches that float untethered in the mix, leaving the track with a pleasant sense of peace woven between the yearning.
Frost says of the track, “This song is about death. I've seen a lot of people interpret it as a breakup song, and I really like that it can be taken that way and still make sense from that perspective. However, that's not what I had in mind when I wrote it. My grandfather, who played a big role as a father figure in my life, had died months before I wrote it.”
He continues, “It's very important to hang on to what's left. Hope you're haunted by what you can get.”
