Baltimore punk outfit Powerwasher debuted with their 2020 effort, The power of positive washing, followed by a 2022 split with fellow Baltimore DIY Consumer Culture. Early next month, the band returns with their energetic album, Everyone laughs. The record sees the band paint with riffs that are equal parts heavy and memorable, incorporating artful songwriting alongside dense beats and visceral performances. They've already shared the record's first single, “Crossing the Street,” followed by “Same Time / Same Channel,” and today they're back with their third and final single, “Catalog,” premiering on Under the Radar.
“Catalog” shows a different side of the band, relying on their tight instrumental chemistry for a chordal, hypnotic intro. The rhythm section is full of exciting bass and knotty drums, while the guitars weave in and out, laced with a razor-toothed edge. Later, the band spin deftly into a rip and manic punk effort, upping the tempo and piling on the riffs as frayed vocal melodies surround an insistent chorus: “I wanna do a bad job.” The results are as raw and edgy as ever, but also reveal a band capable of bringing an unexpected left-field feel to punk.
The band says of the track, “Lyrically, this album is an exploration of social alienation and economic stress. 'The Catalog' is about how these feelings can make a person think their life will be perfect if they buy a really nice fridge, but it can also fill them with an all-consuming rage.”
