The contestants in Take a risk! on Friday (Feb. 2) completed the “Billboard Top 500 Pop Songs” category by answering all five questions correctly, consecutively.
The Take a risk! Producers selected five songs near the top of the list, which was a staff project published on Billboard.com on October 19, 2023 to mark the 65th anniversary of the Billboard Hot 100.
All the songs selected ranked in the top 15 on the chart – Nicki Minaj's “Super Bass” at No. 13, The Beatles' “I Want to Hold Your Hand” at No. 10, Kelly's “Since U Been Gone” Clarkson at No. 5, The Temptations' “My Girl” at No. 3 and Whitney Houston's “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” at No. 1.
This covers a healthy span of years – two songs from the 1960s, one from the 80s, one from the 00s and one from the 10s. The questions came from the writings that accompanied each song on the list. Here are some examples.
“I'll tell you something: The Beatles hit No. 10 with this 1964 hit, 'a force pop had never met.' The answer, of course: “I want to hold your hand.”
“No. 3 was this Temptations classic for a lover, instantly recognizable from the opening bass.” You know it's 'My Girl'.
“No. 5 was this 2005 Grammy winner Kelly Clarkson's 'greatest 21st century contribution to the pop canon so far.' Yep, that's 'Since U Been Gone'.
These questions weren't too hard, but you have to keep in mind that the contestants weren't pop culture experts. They're just generally well-informed people. We're happy to know that engaging in pop music basics is considered an essential part of common knowledge.
