The Villagers (aka Irish musician Conor O'Brien) are releasing a new album, That Golden Hour, on May 10 via Domino. Now he's shared the album's latest single, “You Lucky One,” via a self-directed video for it. It is O'Brien's directorial debut. Check it out below.
“The types of physical currencies change over time, but the basic power relations and principles of exchange persist throughout the cosmetic changes,” O'Brien explains in a press release, which says the song is about two people, one who promises riches but turns out to be a pest. “Who's Using Who?” O'Brien asks. “I think it explores the often simplistic concept of privilege.”
Of the video, O'Brien says: “The video, like the song, is a complicated, messy affair full of hellscapes and inner demons. It exists in a world conquered by irrational beings and emotional, selfish creatures. Corruption of the soul and dishonest motives are the order of the day, so I thought it best served with a side dish of the macabre and sinister.'
That Golden Hour is the band's sixth album and follows in 2021 Fever Dreams and of 2018
The art of pretending to swim. O'Brien previously shared the album's title track.
