Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Long After Dark will get the deluxe treatment this fall with a new reissue that combines the original 1982 album with an extra disc of unreleased music from the era.
Long After Dark Deluxe Editionout Oct. 18 via Geffen/UMe, boasts a dozen “newly discovered” tracks, including seven unreleased tracks, some of which were recorded for the album but left off the LP.
“There was some music recording for Long After Dark that didn't make the record, that I thought would have made it a better album,” Petty once said of the cuts. “I left… four things I liked quite a bit. And probably a few more written that didn't even get in the door.”
Tracks discovered include Petty's version of “Never Be You,” later a hit for Rosanne Cash, “Don't Make Me Walk the Line,” “One on One” and “Ways to Be Wicked,” a Petty/Mike Campbell co-write that eventually landed on the 1985 Lone Justice album.
Other tracks on the bonus disc include Petty and the Heartbreakers songs recorded for French television, among others Long After Dark“Between Two Worlds” and “Straight Into Darkness”. The French TV version of the latter is now accompanied by remastered footage of the band appearing at the Record Plant in 1982.
Long After Dark She performed the Petty classics “You Got Lucky” and “Change of Heart.” The deluxe version is now available at pre-order in a variety of formats, including a Petty store exclusive 2LP pressing of red 180g with splattered black vinyl, housed in a numbered jacket and lithograph. The deluxe edition also comes with liner notes from David Fricke, Cameron Crowe and the album's producer, Jimmy Iovine.
