Tyla accepts the Global Impact Award at Billboard's 2024 R&B No.1s party.
Heran Mamo:
My name is Heran Mamo. I'm the senior R&B, Hip-Hop and Afrobeats writer here at Billboard. Those who know me know that uplifting other African women gives me one of the greatest joys in this job. So it's a great honor to present our next award tonight. For years she dreamed of becoming Africa's first pop star. Now she's taken the world by storm with her signature Papiano sound, performing her inspired pop rendition of South Africa's Amapiano in the US, France, Portugal, Japan, South Korea and more. Last summer, she made a big splash with “Water,” scoring her first Hot 100 Top 10 hit, spending eight weeks at No. 1 on mainstream R&B Hip Hop Airplay, spending 46 weeks and counting, at No. 1 in the US Afrobeats Songs Chart and won the inaugural Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance earlier this year. It has successfully turned “Africa's the world” from a motto into its mission. Join me in a round of applause for Billboard's global powerhouse Tyla.
