The 55th NAACP Image Awards wrapped up over the weekend, and the stars were there in full force as expected. Usher, Coleman Domingoand Fantasia Barrino was among the winners, who presented many nods for The Color Purple.
The NAACP Image Awards took place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California last Saturday (March 16) and were ably hosted by Queen Latifah. For those who don't know, the ceremony highlights entertainers and performers in various genres including television, film, music and also podcasting.
Usher was named Entertainer of the Year and gave a moving acceptance speech that looked at his three decades as a performer and how he's grown with his fans. The singer also touched on his recent marriage, how his mother played a key role in his rise, as well as his popular concert in Las Vegas. Oprah Winfrey announced the award, which came as a surprise to those in attendance.
Speaking of Winfrey, The Color Purple won several awards throughout the night as Fantasia Barrino took home Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture for her role in the musical. Dressed smartly in purple, Winfrey executive produced the 2023 film alongside Steven Spielberg. The Outstanding Cinematography award also went to The Color Purple.
Taraji P. Henson, who has been outspoken about pay inequality for women in Hollywood, won Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Color Purple. The film also won the award for Outstanding Ensemble Cast in a Motion Picture.
Colman Domingo was a two-award winner, taking Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture for his role in Rustin and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for The Color Purple. Domingo was also nominated for Entertainer of the Year.
