Kendrick Lamar and Killer Mike was among the winners at 2024 BET Awards while Usher took the stage in a moment that stood out.
On Sunday Night (June 30), the 2024 BET Awards were held in front of a packed house at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California. The evening, hosted by actress Taraji P. Henson, was a star-studded affair that saw some of the biggest black personalities in entertainment accept awards. R&B superstar Usher, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award, was the highlight of the four-hour show, which also saw him pick up the award for Best Male R&B/Pop Artist.
Usher took to the stage to accept the award after a medley of his greatest hits from artists including Childish Gambino, Summer Walker, Keke Palmer, Victoria Monét and Teyana Taylor with Latto closing with her own version of the verse by Ludacris on 'Yeah! LA Reid and Babyface presented the award to Usher, who began his speech by saying: Getting here sure wasn't easy, but it was worth it. This lifetime achievement award, I don't know man. It's too early to pick it up? Because I'm still running and shooting and I'm still loving it – like I was eight years old.”
Kendrick Lamar took home the award for Best Male Hip-Hop Artist, beating out Drake as his song “Not Like Us” served as the show opener as Henson rapped a performance dressed as the Compton artist at his “Pop Out “. . Nicki Minaj secured the award for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist. and Killah Mike took home the biggest award of the night by winning Album of the Year for his recent release, Michael. The Atlanta rapper wowed the crowd with his acceptance speech.
The rest of the night also featured energizing performances from Megan Thee Stallion, who appeared at the BET Awards for the first time in three years, while Victoria Monét thrilled the crowd with her set of her hit 'On My Mama' and her new single 'Alright'. The new wave of female rappers also took to the stage, with GloRilla parachuting down from the rooftop to kick it off. Sexxy Red also performed a medley of her hits, while Ice Spice gave the crowd a preview of Y2K's upcoming album with a quick set.
