The Villagers (aka Irish musician Conor O'Brien) are releasing a new album, That Golden Hour, this Friday via Domino. Now he's shared the album's latest single, “I Want What I Don't Need,” via a lyric video for it. Check it out below.
O'Brien said of the song in a press release: “It's a little tragic comedy about the concept of free will, spiritual humility and the commercialization of sacred things. As with all the songs on the album, a longing for transcendence at the dawn of the internet age is at its core. We are constantly bombarded with ideas, images and products that tell us our inner instructions are inadequate. that we need external support or validation to become whole beings. The song has fun with this: “And I'll marry my beliefs / And they'll harden like my arteries / And I'll take myself so seriously / And I'll want what I don't need.”
That Golden Hour is the band's sixth album and follows in 2021 Fever Dreams and 2018 The art of pretending to swim.
O'Brien previously shared the album's title track and “You Lucky One.”
