For the 3/11 installment of Tiny Desk, NPR welcome the most suitable band: 311.
Led by singer/guitarist Nick Hexum, the Nebraska rock band huddled behind their literally tiny office space to kick things off with “Beautiful Disaster,” a tune from 1997's 311 album. Transistor. With Tim Mahoney on guitar, Doug “SA” Martinez on turntables and vocals, Chad Sexton on drums, and Aaron “P-Nut” Wills on bass, the band went on to become a hit with their 1995 self-titled record, ” All Mixed Up.”
“This kind of reminds me of being in my dad's basement, being back by the pool table,” Hexum remarked, before teasing, “But it smells better in here.”
311 continued to slow things down a bit for “Amber” from 2001 From chaos. For their finale, the guys closed with “Down”, also from their LP of the same name.
After they hit their last notes, P-Nut held up a hand heart. “Thank you very much!” a beaming Hexum told the home crowd as he showered the band with applause. “Lots of love. Stay positive, love your life.”
In September, 311 released a 30th anniversary edition of their 1993 debut album MUSIC. In the years since the original MUSICthe group has scored 16 albums on the Billboard 200, 10 of which entered the top 10.
The band's most recent studio album, Travelerarrived in 2019 and debuted at No. 18 on the Billboard 200.
In 2022, the 311 went through “a bit of a rough time,” as Hexum revealed in the Advertising sign's Behind the Setlist podcast. P-Nut had tweeted that he was “planning on taking a break from the band” when he fulfills his obligations. However, over the next five months, the team was able to work things out behind the scenes.
“I think breaks are healthy and we've had a pretty intense touring schedule,” Hexum said at the time. “Everything is very well on track. And we've had some really good conversations and discussions lately. We're excited for the next chapter — including P-Nut.”
The band's fans celebrate every March 11th as 311 Days, so it's only fitting that they celebrate with a Tiny Desk concert for the band's custom holiday. Watch our 311 take on Tiny Desk above.
