Track by Track is a recurring article series where artists guide readers through each song from their latest release. Today, Wisp takes us through their new EP, Pandora.
Wisp has risen quickly in the contemporary shoegaze scene, writing satisfying and confusing songs with an experience that extends well beyond his 19 years. She is already an accomplished woman for such a young age and her debut EP, Pandora, affirms what was already known: that she is one of the strongest members of the current shoegaze revival (and that's why we named her our March CoSign!). With a heavy dream pop influence, her voice flows through these atmospheric tracks, while her instruments remain grounded, rocking and completely drowned in the sound.
The EP arrives softly, with the title track's instrumental slowly seeping into listeners' ears. The song becomes a massive, absorbing instrumental that is impossible to ignore. It's easy to see why this is the title track and opener, as it sets the stage and establishes the thesis of not only Pandorabut of Wisp as an artist.
After “Pandora” is the viral hit “Your face”, which for the first time brought the artist well-deserved attention. “'Your face' was the first song I wrote and the one I owe for everything, including the existence of this EP,” says Wisp. Consequence. The staying power of it is clear; This is a hit for a reason.
The rest of the songs carry the momentum established by the first two tracks, as well as the Wisp influences, which, while clear, are repurposed to create something new and fresh. Pandora It is something exciting, something to behold, and not simply a rehash of the past.
