“You're opening a whole can of worms of crazy people and pundits driving the hell out of you”
Maren Morris said her infant son received death threats after the singer criticized Morgan Wallen for infamously using a racial slur in 2021, with Morris speaking out about the experience this week on Sophia Bush Work in progress Podcast.
“The death threat part for me as a young mother was, yes, obviously terrifying,” she told Bush. “And they weren't death threats against me, they were against my son. It's like “oh, wow, now we're getting the kids involved, the ones you cared about so much.” It's incredibly dangerous and scary, you're opening a whole can of worms of crazy people and pundits who are fooling you.”
Wallen was caught saying the 'n-word' on video in 2021, sparking an avalanche of backlash from the general public as well as the music industry. “It's actually representative of our city because this isn't his first 'fight' and he just broke a massive streaming record last month,” Morris wrote at the time. “We all know it wasn't the first time he used that word. We keep them rich and protected at all costs without recourse.”
Wallen apologized, but the controversy left a lasting impact on his public perception. However, it didn't slow down his career much as he remains one of the biggest country artists in the world today. His albums One thing at a time and Dangerous: The Double album remain two of the best-selling albums of 2024, even with the former being a year old and the latter three years old.
Three years after her initial comments on the situation, Morris said she stands by her claims.
“I don't regret it, I don't apologize,” he said. “I feel exactly the same as I did that day. Would I use the Twitter channels again, probably not. There are probably more dignified ways to get my point across, but it is what it is. Don't be racist, don't be transphobic, don't be homophobic. The only thing that made me feel bad was realizing even in this music community here in Nashville, who's going to bat for you or people of color? Who's going to beat them?'
