Drew Barrymore has confirmed from her old pal Adam Sandler that a Happy Gilmore sequel is in the works.
The actress and talk show host broke the news via a preview clip for Friday’s episode of the Drew Barrymore Show. Barrymore initially brought up the subject of a Happy Gilmore sequel to her audience, saying “I want it. I need it.” She continued, saying “I stayed up last night with my daughter watching Billy Madison. I sent Sandler a video of that, and then he sent me another video back, and I’m waiting to see if he’s confirming about the Happy Gilmore 2 script.”
She cites Christopher McDonald’s interview from last month, where the actor — who played Shooter McGavin in Happy Gilmore — claimed that Sandler had shown him a draft of the long-awaited sequel. The clip then shifts to later on in the show’s tape, where Barrymore apparently gets a text back from the Sand Man: “This just in, I have breaking news,” Barrymore told her audience. “I’ll just say this, from my source, that it is in process. There is a process, and that process is in process.” Watch the Instagram clip below.
While there haven’t been any official updates on the status of a new Happy Gilmore sequel, that’s now two of Sandler’s collaborators that have confirmed the film’s existence. McDonald told Cleveland’s 92.3 The Fan “I saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this.’ I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How ’bout that,’ [and] he shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2,” the actor said. “Maybe you should cut that out (of this audio) because I don’t wanna be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit.”
As for Barrymore, she wasn’t in Happy Gilmore, but did star alongside Sandler in the films The Wedding Singer, 50 First Dates, and most recently, 2014’s Blended.
