Conflicting sounds and emotions collide on “Go Back,” the new collaboration from Sub Focus and John Summit, but they push each other forward to deliver one of the best dance records of the year so far.
Teaming up with emerging singer-songwriter Julia Church, they weave a web of house and drum & bass using threads of longing. A poetic exploration of the indestructible bond forged between two kindred spirits, their lyrics evoke the feeling of being frozen in a precious moment.
Accepting her role as dreamer, Church invites her muse to take her deeper and deeper into a hypnagogic state as she questions whether their connection is more than a fleeting memory. Her voice comes to life through raw vulnerability before Summit cuts her into an atmospheric four-on-the-floor drop.
Then it's Sub Focus's time to shine as it implements a perfect BPM shift before unleashing a euphoric drum & bass sequence, a masterful exercise in tension and release. As his kinetic basslines and soaring synths swell, Church's desperation intensifies, his voice a trembling promise to give her a piece of his soul to keep forever.
“I loved being in the studio with John last year,” said Sub Focus in a instagram post. “We came up with the idea of speeding up the tempo in the middle of the song between House and Drum & Bass, and the crowd reaction has been incredible every time we play it. Shout out to Julia for such an incredible voice.”
The new single arrives as Summit records their debut album, which they announced in November 2023. They then released several singles: “Hungover” (featuring Mathame and Camden Cox), “Shiver” (featuring Hayla), “Eat The Bass.” “and a remix of The Temper Trap's 2008 classic”sweet disposition” alongside Silver Panda. Summit has not yet announced the album's title or release date.
