Lewis Capaldi enjoys one heavenly rise in the UK chart where his second album returns to the summit.
The Scottish singer-songwriter has his first No.1 of 2024 with Torn by the desire to be sent from heaven (EMI), up 72-1, an album that topped the national chart for two consecutive weeks after its 2023 release.
The new chart wings came from a surprise “special edition”, which features five previously unreleased cuts available in new physical and digital formats.
The love extends to Capaldi's chart-topping debut LP Divinely Uninspired in Hellwhich improves 46-28. Divinely Uninspired has logged 10 weeks at No.1 since its release in 2019.
The 27-year-old entertainer gave fans an update and some insight into his own struggles with a lengthy — and positive — message on New Year's Eve in which he noted an improvement in his overall health. “Right now I'm taking some time off to focus on my health and well-being and I'm doing great,” she explained. He's still not ready to return to the spotlight, some six months after announcing his hiatus from touring.
Meanwhile, Taylor Swift's ex-chief 1989 (Taylor Edition) holds No. 2 on the Official UK Albums Chart, published on Friday, January 5, and is Swift's best of seven LPs in the top 40. Further down the list is 2022 Midnight (No. 8), 2020's folklore (No. 9), 2017's fame (No. 12), of 2019 Lover (No. 13), 2020's forever (No. 24) and his original 2014 recording 1989 (No. 40). According to figures published last week by the Society of Official Charts, 1989 (Taylor Edition) was the UK's best-selling vinyl LP of 2023.
Completing the top 3 in the final tally is The Weeknd's career retrospective, Highlights (Republic Records/XO), while ABBA's gem, Gold: Greatest hits (Polydor), climbs 5-4, its highest position since 2008. Gold extends the all-time record to 1,131 weeks on the chart.
Finally, Vermont, US-born singer-songwriter Noah Kahan is enjoying a new peak with his third studio album Stick Season (Island), 8-3. The title track from it leads the official UK Singles Chart for the first time.
