As spotted with Vulture, the disgraced singer is accused of sexual harassment by his own offspring. Last week, a new documentary premiered that shed light on the journey of his first. According to the TVEI Network, R. Kelly's Karma: A Daughter's Journey reveals “the traumatic impact of her father's actions that uncovers heartbreaking secrets and betrayals within the family, reclaiming her voice and identity in the wake of his infamous scandals.” During the two-part play, Buku Abi, born Joanne Kelly, says the lover molested her when she was 8 or 9 years old.
“For a long time, I didn't even want to believe it happened. I was too scared to tell anyone,” she explained. “I really feel like that one millisecond just completely changed my life and changed who I was as a person and changed the glow that I had and the light that I used to carry.” She went on to reveal how the first incident happened when R. Kelly threw a party and she decided to sleep in his office to be close to her father. Late in the morning she says she woke up to find him touching her inappropriately. “I just remember waking up and him touching me. And I didn't know what to do, so I just laid there and pretended to be [asleep]”, he added.
According to the documents was acquired with WBEZ Chicago, Andrea Kelly's mother filed a report with local police in 2009. The allegation was deemed “baseless” by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. “The DCFS employee/investigator … specifically and personally advised Jane Doe's mother that despite the fact that [the caseworker] believed the events occurred, had no choice but to consider the matter moot based on the length of time between the events occurring and Jane Doe reporting the incident,” the filing said.
Following the release of the documentary, Buku Abi took to Instagram to explain in detail why she decided to tell her story. “I did it for me, I did it for my son. I did it for peace of mind,” he wrote. “I did it for those who love me and know me but never understood me growing up. I did it to honor the truth. I did it to look my biggest demon in the eye and tell them I'm done.”
